How to Interview for a Game Job

Lou Garrett asked:

So you’re a hard core gamer who finally scored an interview with one of the top gaming firms. So now what? What will they expect you to know? What questions will they ask? It’s important to go into an interview prepared, no matter what the job.

There are steps that every single applicant out there should take to ensure they have a smooth interview process. Although I will focus mostly on game jobs, this really does apply to everyone going on an interview regardless of the position they are seeking.

1. Dress Professionally. You would think this is a given, but I have seen applicants wearing dirty tee shirts and ripped jeans on even the highest of positions. This applies even if you’re planning on getting a job in the gaming industry. You may be in an office testing video games and dress may be casual, but an interview is not. It is your opportunity to put your best foot forward. The same applies for appearing well rested and groomed.

2. Bring Your Resume. Although the employer has most likely viewed your resume before scheduling you for an interview, bring a hard copy. Choose a professional paper to print your resume on. Do not use any other colored paper than tan or a very light gray. Pink is not an appropriate resume color. Also, bring along your information for references including names, numbers and addresses. You may be asked for this information during your interview process.

3. Know Your Employer. Most big game companies have major websites. You should do some research on who they are, what games they distribute, what their goals are etc. This way when you walk in for the interview, you already know the basics about the company and don’t need to ask silly questions that could disqualify you for the position.

4. Re-read The Job Posting. You should be prepared to answer questions such as “Why do you feel qualified for this position?” If you don’t know the exact qualifications, how can you correctly answer this question?

5. Interview Time. So now you’re sitting in front of the employer. What can you do to stand out in their mind? You can be extra outgoing. You can say something funny (but not ridiculous). You can come across extremely smart and well spoken. There are many things that you can personally do to stand out from the other applicants competing for the very same position.

6. Tests. For most game tester and other game related jobs, you will be put through a series of tests. These include Aptitude, IQ, spelling, grammar, etc. So be as prepared as you can to take these tests. Make sure you have made enough time to be able to spend with this employer going though this process. Do not book interviews too closely to one another.

7. Interview Questions. You can be prepared on this. If you’ve ever been on any interview, then you know the basics of what an employer will ask. Be prepared to explain why you’re best suited for the position. You should also be prepared to explain any gaps in your employment history.

8. Game Position Questions. There are other questions that are asked in positions related to gaming that would not be asked in other positions such as cashiers, etc. Below is a brief list:

* Have you ever located a bug in a game?

* Tell us what you think game testing is all about.

* What are some of your strengths and weaknesses?

* Are you open to overtime?

* What is your favorite game & why?

* Why do you want to work for our company?

If you walk into this interview knowing that you will get the job, then your chances are that much greater than the other applicants. Be positive, be alert and above all be prepared.
